On August 20, 1857, the trial of Les Fleurs du Mal opened, which condemned its author, Charles Baudelaire, for offense against public morality.<div> On August 20, 1857, the trial of Les Fleurs du Mal opened, condemning its author, Charles Baudelaire, for offending public morals, to a heavy fine and the suppression of six poems from his collection. For the poet, deeply wounded, it was nothing more than a misunderstanding.</div><div> The play Les Fleurs d'un Malentendu takes an offbeat approach to this story, replaying on stage, in tableaux and at a frenetic pace, the life of Charles Baudelaire, as well as the birth of his masterful work Les Fleurs du Mal and the trial that condemned him.</div><div><br></div><div> Towards the end of his life, Baudelaire stayed in a sanatorium. Suffering from aphasia and mental illness, he was plagued by his obsessions. This hospital room is our starting point.</div><div> Night and silence are fertile ground for hallucinations, for the arrival of ghosts. The darkened room transforms, becoming populated with mirages and presences. On the threshold of death, his entire life flashes before his eyes. It is a grand ball that summons the figures of the past. Reality then shifts. The theater fulfills its almost ritualistic and sacred function, defying irreversible time.</div>
