Premiered at the Dorset Theatre in London in 1692, Purcell's arrangement is remarkably imaginative: to Shakespeare's already relatively complex story are added parallel plots, whimsical and moving characters, others more burlesque or diabolical. The musical component of the work is prodigious, featuring some of Purcell's most beautiful arias, such as the poignant "O let me weep" and the sparkling "Thrice happy lovers," where the composer's art of counterpoint and theatricality are at its zenith.
