Heroic symphonies and revolutionary impulses.<div> For the third evening of the Beethoven cycle, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera of Versailles will perform a program that is very republican.</div><div> The Third Symphony is the first of the Bonn master's "revolutionary" symphonies; an element of a new style, establishing the canons of the great nineteenth-century symphony. The pairing of the Third and Seventh symphonies bears witness to the bitter and wounded Romantic resistance that Beethoven offered to the former hero of the Revolution, Bonaparte, now Napoleon. The connection is both political and musical: one will notice, in particular, the striking similarity between the funeral marches of the two works, which is immediately apparent... and audible.</div>
