Rimbaud / Verlaine: Violence
To bookDescription

A spectrum of violence, "Rimbaud-Verlaine: Violences" invites us to experience the thread running through the relationship between two major poets of the French language. At the end of the 19th century, 16-year-old Arthur Rimbaud meets Paul Verlaine and finds himself thrust into the unfamiliar world of French high society. This budding love between the two men marks the beginning of a descent into violence.
We are swept away from smoky cafes where we gorge ourselves on absinthe to the barricades of the Paris Commune, passing through the Brussels court judging Verlaine after his pistol shot against his lover.

A journey into the end of a century whose political stakes make us think cruelly of our current situation: homophobia, domestic violence, sexism, social struggles.
"Rimbaud-Verlaine: Violence" recreates the relationship between these two great French poets through their writings. A relationship tossed about by love, poetry, inner turmoil, and politics.

Production: a Thalie Envolée creation, produced by Cie Artaban.
Their story isn't told. Their poetry isn't recited. It's thrown at us haphazardly. It's harsh. It hurts. And it's beautiful. Very beautiful. A. Neyton
