Napoleonic Museum: In the house occupied by the Emperor in July 1815, furniture, portraits, and memorabilia… African Museum: Artistic, ethnological, and zoological collections relating to Central and Southern Africa. Off the coast of La Rochelle and Rochefort, twenty kilometers from the Île de Ré and five from the Île d'Oléron, the Île d'Aix was for a long time a strategic military location. But despite its long history of warfare, it owes its fame to Napoleon. The Emperor stayed there, after the defeat at Waterloo, from July 9 to 13, 1815, the date of his surrender to the British. The house where he resided, donated to the national museums in 1933, houses Napoleonic memorabilia. The island also houses an African museum.
