John Gavin Malkovich (9 décembre 1953 à Christopher, Illinois, États-Unis) est un acteur, un producteur de cinéma et un réalisateur américain.
Biographie
Il est d'ascendance croate par son père, et allemande et écossaise par sa mère. Passionné de théâtre, il crée sa propre troupe à l'université où il met en scène et interprète des pièces. Après ses études, il rejoint la troupe du Steppenwolf Theater en 1976 où, six années durant, il joue, met en scène et crée les décors de plus de cinquante productions, dont Mort d'un commis voyageur. C'est à cette époque qu'il rencontre Gary Sinise. Il s'affiche à New York, à Londres et à Los Angeles. Il remporte plusieurs récompenses, notamment le Obie Award.
Après deux apparitions à la télévision en 1981, il débute au cinéma dans True West en 1983. Pour son rôle dans Les Saisons du cœur, il est nominé aux Oscars comme meilleur second rôle masculin. Il tourne avec Dustin Hoffman dans Mort d'un commis voyageur, sous la direction de Volker Schlöndorff, puis dans La Déchirure, mais c'est Steven Spielberg qui lui donne son premier grand rôle au cinéma dans l'Empire du soleil.
Le rôle qui le révèle est sans doute celui du célèbre Valmont dans Les Liaisons dangereuses, un film réalisé par Stephen Frears où John Malkovich joue aux côtés de Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer et la jeune Uma Thurman.
John Malkovich s'est établi avec sa famille en France, dans le Vaucluse pendant 9 ans, mais demeure à Boston depuis le début du XXIe siècle.
John Malkovich a reçu en 2008 le Molière du metteur en scène pour Good Canary.
Il se décrit comme libertarien. Selon certaines de ses déclarations au Chicago Tribune, il soutiendrait la peine de mort, mais d'autres propos paraissent plus nuancés. <ref>Selon le site IMDB, il aurait dit: "We're all going to die, so the death penalty should be called the early-death penalty. And the furor about it strikes me as ridiculous. To make criminals feel what they've chosen to provoke others to feel would be the ideal penalty, but it's impossible to do that. All the things Americans rave about as being sacrosanct are to me incredibly deeply flawed.". Obviously Malkovich couldn't hide his sarcasm and said he'd had a party the night the killer was executed. The English writer bit, put it all down as fact, and the episode still rankles.
Yes, Malkovich is a conservative. But, he adds: "You can't always believe what you read, as you would know, being a journalist. That would be exceptionally dangerous. Morally, intellectually, emotionally, dangerous."
